The Survivor: Critically acclaimed at Toronto Film Festival 2021

Barry Levinson's biographical drama The Survivor which stars Ben Foster as boxer Harry Haft had its world premiere at TIFF – Toronto International Film Festival 2021, and the critics praise the storytelling, directing and acting.

When the Nazis invade Poland, Harry Haft (Ben Foster), who is Jewish, is sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp. He is a powerfully built man, so a charming but sadistic officer (Billy Magnussen) offers him an impossible deal: fight fellow prisoners in the boxing ring for the amusement of his captors, or die. The winner of the bout survives to fight again. The loser is shot or sent to the gas chamber. How far will Harry’s will to live take him? What will he do to escape the death all around him?

The film stars Ben Foster, Vicky Krieps, Billy Magnussen, Peter Sarsgaard, Dar Zuzovsky, John Leguizamo, Danny DeVito, Saro Emirze and is directed by Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning, Vietnam, Sleepers, Wag the Dog).

Here are some reviews:

“It’s a haunted and haunting performance at the center of the most substantial movie that Levinson has made in years. Ben Foster’s transformation in Barry Levinson’s The Survivor, is something different — because he morphs into Holocaust survivor Harry Haft from two different directions in the same film.” (Steve Pond, The Wrap).

“A true story so unique it really becomes its own powerful tale of a man trying to survive the haunting memory of war experiences well beyond the war itself. Haft’s story will move audiences and is worth telling.” (Pete Hammond, Deadline).

“The best film the director has made for cinemas in the nearly quarter-century since Wag the Dog. Delivers enough emotional resolution to satisfy mainstream audiences.” (John Defore, The Hollywood Reporter).

“One can’t deny the empathy Levinson brings to the material, connecting Haft’s odyssey to those of other Jewish characters he has chronicled in earlier films. Audiences will be courted on the strength of Foster’s typically uncompromising, emotionally nuanced work.” (Tim Grierson, Screen Daily).

Lassie Come Home - Interview with director Hanno Olderdissen: “The audience can look forward to a modern film with a nostalgic feel and lots of fun.”

This weekend, Lassie Come Home (directed by Hanno Olderdissen) re-enters the Romanian cinemas. On this occasion, we bring you an exclusive interview with the Director of the movie, Hanno Olderdissen.

Hanno Olderdissen was born in 1976 in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He is known for his work on Robin (2008), Rock My Heart (2017) and What to Do in Case of Fire (2001) as well for the family film Wendy 2 - Freundschaft für immer (2018) and the series Der Bulle und das Biest (2019).

How did you approach the idea of bringing Lassie again into the big screen?
I wanted to create a film that was modern and interesting for the children but also has a classic nostalgic touch to honor the original Lassie Films and Series that we, as parents and grandparents know from our own childhood.

When did you first read the book by Eric Knight? How does this movie differ from the book?
I read the novel once, when I started working on the project together with the Producer Henning Ferber and Screenwriter Jane Ainscough. The Novel has a very epic story that goes over many months and has many chapters. The Story of the movie concentrates more on Lassie and her owner Flo and how they overcome adventures and obstacles to find back to each other.

Working on the two episodes of Der Bulle und das Biest helped you in directing this new Lassie movie?
It was a good “practice” for me to shot a TV Series with an bullmastiff. There I already got to know our excellent dog trainer Renate Hiltl and her crew. It surely helped and prepared me for directing Lassie.

After Rock My Heart and Wendy 2 - Freundschaft für immer where the “stars” were horses, now you bring this iconic dog back on the big screen. It seems that you are an animal lover, like me. Do you have a pet?
Unfortunately, I live in the City and have a Job, that involves a lot of travelling, so my lifestyle is not suitable for a pet. But when I was a little boy I lived in the countryside and my father trained racehorses, that I used to ride, when I was a child. Later I was very keen on showjumping.  And we had a little Jack Russel Terrier. So, yes: I am an animal lover.

Do you have something to transmit to the audience from Romania and Hungary, the two countries where Prorom will release the movie? What should the audience expect when they go see this movie?
I think the audience can look forward to a modern film with a nostalgic feel and lots of fun, adventure, drama and two very sweet and beautiful dogs.

Helen Mirren declares War in the Kitchen - Sunday on Antena 1

Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren returns to the small screens in Romania on Sunday, May 17 on Antena 1, with a delicious performance in the comedy The Hundred-Foot Journey (titled in Romania War in the Kitchen), a film produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey.

Directed by Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Hachi: A Dog's Tale, Chocolate), The Hundred-Foot Journey tells the story of Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal), a culinary genius from India, capable of making innovative dishes. Forced to leave their homeland, Hassan's family settles in a picturesque town in the south of France, the ideal place to open an Indian restaurant.

But Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the authoritative owner of a nearby luxury restaurant, doesn't seem to be happy about the new business.

The dispute between the two locations becomes more and more fierce until Hassan's talent and passion for French gastronomy manage to impress Madame Mallory.

The film is based on the novel The Hundred-Foot Journey, an international bestseller by Richard Morais, which has been published in over 30 countries.

The comedy The Hundred-Foot Journey abounds in flavours and recipes that will delight viewers. With a lot of passion for the profession, a struggle to fit in and funny moments, the comedy brings together two completely different worlds and the talent of a young man determined to achieve success through his cooking.
